At Turners Hill CofE Primary School, we are very proud of our writing! Our aim is to produce a lively and stimulating environment in which staff are committed to teaching individual, group and class activities that promote rich speaking, listening, reading and writing experiences. Throughout the school day, the children have lessons that give them the opportunity to learn, practise and embed all the key skills needed for writing including spelling, grammar, vocabulary lessons and handwriting. Writing is linked to the children’s topic or involves exploring an exciting text. The writing is purposeful so that the children know why they are writing. For example, when exploring our ‘Rainforest’ topic, the children wrote letters to the lumber jack to persuade him not to chop down the trees. The stimulus for the writing started with exploring the animals’ perspectives from the book, ‘The Great Kapok Tree.’ After writing the letters, the children sent these to Blue Peter for a badge.

Children have opportunities to explore writing different genres including narratives, explanations, instructions, non-fiction and poetry. The teachers use the same structure to plan and teach writing. Each unit of writing will always incorporate lessons in the following order:

  1. Awe and wonder lesson (a multi-sensory approach to hook the children)
  2. Developing ideas lesson (exploring vocabulary)
  3. Example (reading an example text - analysing vocabulary and the grammatical features)
  4. Planning (supported with ideas from previous lessons)
  5. First draft (writing their first draft)
  6. Editing (the teacher will provide developmental marking for the children to respond to)
  7. Publishing (this can be performing or re-writing with a focus on presentation)

Within each lesson, teachers will use a variety of visual, audio and kinesthetic approach to capture the children’s imagination. Writing is always celebrated within the classroom and out. Many children will share their work with Mr Turney to receive a Headteacher’s award and work is selected for the ‘Wonderful Writing Wall’ in Mr Turney’s office.
