Our school believes that PE, sport and physical activity, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a vital contributor to pupils' physical, mental, emotional, social development and well-being. All pupils in the school have equality of opportunity in terms of curriculum balance, curriculum time, use of resources, use of facilities and access to extra-curricular activities. At Turners Hill CofE Primary School, all children receive two hours of PE and sport taught by either Coach David, our specialist PE teacher or their class teachers. The sessions cover the statutory aims and subject content required by the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Our overview plan shows the PE lesson focuses for each year group, throughout the academic year. By providing a range of focused activities and sports, children are able to develop their skills as they progress throughout Turners Hill CofE primary school.

It is our intent for all children at Turners Hill CofE Primary School to achieve personal success in developing practical skills in order to participate, compete and lead a healthy lifestyle. In order to achieve this, they will have:

  • The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
  • The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
  • High levels of physical fitness.
  • The ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
  • The ability to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
  • Exceptional levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
  • A keen interest in PE. A willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra-curricular sport.
  • The ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

Swimming

Turners Hill CofE Primary School provides swimming lessons for all children in Year 3 at an offsite pool. The lessons focus on developing the children’s confidence in the water, awareness of how to be safe, as well as their ability to swim using a range of strokes.

Awards

The School Games Mark is a national awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school. It requires schools and children to develop and sustain the following values in PE, sport and physical activity: respect, determination, passion, honesty, teamwork and self-belief.
In 2018-19, Turners Hill CofE Primary School achieved the Gold award for our PE, sports and physical activity provision. This award has been renewed for the academic year 2020-21 and we will reapply for it in 2022.

Mid Sussex Active

Mid Sussex Active (MSA) is an organisation which supports schools with provision of festivals and competitions, professional development and providing community club links. They provide a range of festivals and competitions throughout the school year, within the local area. The festivals focus on encouraging less active and/or less competitive children to try new sports and develop skills. Events include: boccia, sports hall athletics, Boys/Girls Get Active and Inclusion festivals. The competitions, where children get to compete against other schools, allows them to apply their skills from lessons in a more competitive environment (i.e. through matches and tournaments). Events include: tag rugby, Quikstick hockey, cross country, netball and football. Children from a range of year groups and abilities are provided with opportunities to attend the fixtures – they are always great fun!

Achievements

Pupils are actively encouraged to share achievements from sports/physical activities that they are involved in outside of school. These are celebrated in their classrooms, in Friday Celebration Assemblies and on the character display board in school.
